About Jinks
Hi, I'm Jinks! I'm a 5-year-old, 15-pound bundle of love. Don't let my age fool you, I'm definitely not ready for retirement!
My favourite thing to do is go for walks. I love exploring parks and wooded trails, and I can happily walk up to 6 km a day. Getting plenty of exercise helps me stay calm, quiet, and happy when I'm relaxing at home.
I'm also a pretty good boy when my people need to leave the house. I've been left home alone and uncrated for up to six hours with no accidents or trouble. I enjoy my independence, but my favourite place is still wherever my family is.
I'm a little shy and nervous when meeting new people. I’m getting braver though! I’ve started approaching people on our walks for little sniffs. I love getting pats from people I know, but when I meet someone new, I’d rather have a little time to get comfortable before accepting their attention. I can be the same way when people come into the house. I need a family who will give me the time and space to build trust at my own pace.
I can also startle when I hear unfamiliar or loud sounds and may let out a little "boof." My foster mom uses a calm "shh" or "quiet" and I settle quickly. She's also taught me some hand signals that help me feel confident and calm, and she'd love to pass those along to my new family.
I currently live with a cat and we get along wonderfully, we even play together! I've also lived with other dogs. I do love being the centre of attention, though, so if you have other dogs, I'll just need a little reminder that sometimes I have to wait my turn for affection.
I'm not food-motivated when it comes to training. In fact, I thrive on praise and positive feedback! That's especially helpful because I have a very specific diet. I can only eat my prescribed dog food, as other foods can trigger a pancreatitis flare-up. Otherwise, I'm a healthy and happy boy.
Whether we're relaxing at home, exploring a trail, or going for a car ride, spending time with my people is my favourite thing. Because I startle easily, I would likely do best in a home with older, dog-savvy children.
My foster mom says I have the most soulful eyes, and she might be right. I'm a gentle little guy with so much love to give, and I'm looking for someone who will give me the time and patience to show them just how special I am.

What type of home is Jinks looking for:
Jinks is looking for an active but patient family who will enjoy taking him for daily walks, hikes, and adventures while also giving him plenty of time to relax at home. His ideal family will understand that he's shy and needs to build trust with new people at his own pace.
He would do well with a confident family who can continue helping him build his confidence using calm, positive reinforcement. A home with a friendly dog or cat could be a great fit, provided Jinks receives individual attention and is given time to adjust.
Because he startles easily, a home with older children would be best.

Non-negotiable 'must-haves':
-
A family committed to continuing his confidence-building.
-
Daily walks and regular opportunities for exercise and enrichment.
-
A calm, patient approach to new people and situations.
-
Strict adherence to his prescribed diet due to his history of pancreatitis.
-
Older, dog-savvy children if children are in the home.
